Users Interfaces - What are they?

User interface design is the discipline of creating interfaces for web sites, applications, hardware and communications devices, with the emphasis on the users experience and interaction with the device. Where traditional design is often focused on making an object or application more aesthetically pleasing, the goal of user interface design is to make the users interaction with the devices as intuitive as possible.

Where graphic design is used to determine the style and theme of the interface, it is the job of the user interface designer to ensure that the intuitive functionality of the web site is not compromised.

Why should I care?

Increased sales – A well designed and created website with user interaction as the primary focus can help reduce user disorientation and confusion, helping to convert more visitors to sales.

Increased users – Well implemented, intuitive websites help encourage users, and more importantly, aid customer retention.

Time saving – Intuitive design allows users to operate the web site or application quickly and efficiently, essential in critical or time dependant applications

So in a nutshell that means?

If you need your web applications to focus on user interaction and functionality, rather than pure aesthetic design, then user interface design will be essential. User interface designers are responsible for how users interact with the website or application, ensuring an intuitive experience from start to finish.
